Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Enhance Productivity and Physiological Responses of Nostoc calcicola ISC 89 under Phenanthrene Stress

چکیده :
Abstract Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as phenanthrene (PHE), are persistent environmental pollutants posing significant ecological risks in contaminated soils, sediments, and aquatic systems. In this study, the cyanobacterium Nostoc calcicola ISC 89, a PHE-tolerant strain, was used to evaluate the role of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe-NPs) in enhancing growth and biochemical parameters in the presence of PHE. Cultures were exposed to PHE with and without Fe-based nanoparticles, and several biochemical parameters were analyzed. The co-application of Fe-NPs significantly enhanced biomass production, chlorophyll a, carotenoids, phycobiliproteins, and soluble metabolites, while malondialdehyde levels significantly decreased. This study highlights the potential of Fe-NPs as a strategy to improve the resilience and productivity of microalgae under stress conditions for biotechnological applications.
