A Data-Driven Fire Vulnerability Index for Underground Metal Mines

چکیده :
Fire incidents in deep underground metal mines pose significant risks to human life, operational continuity, and economic assets. This study develops a data-driven Mine Fire Vulnerability Index (MFVI) by integrating geological, geochemical, and ventilation parameters into a unified quantitative framework. Field data from six underground metal mines in Iran, including rock type, lithology, sulfide content, moisture, airflow, gas composition, temperature gradients, and historical fire records, were normalized and weighted using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM). The MFVI was validated using logistic regression and random forest models, achieving accuracies of 87% and 92%, respectively. Sensitivity analysis identified sulfide content and ventilation efficiency as the most influential factors. High vulnerability zones were associated with sulfide-rich lithology, fractured rock formations, and insufficient ventilation. The proposed index provides a quantitative approach for fire risk assessment, ventilation planning, and hazard mitigation in underground mining environments.
